How does dog leptospirosis look like?
Leptospirosis is an infectious disease, which usually has focal nature, affecting both humans and animals.
Dog leptospirosis (infectious jaundice) – natural focal animal disease, characterized by fever, anemia, hemorrhagic lesions of the kidneys, liver, mucous membranes of the mouth, gastrointestinal tract, and disorders of the central nervous system.
The causative agent of leptospirosis is related to spirochetes. Microorganism reaches a length of 5 to 18 nm. Leptospira doesn’t refract the light, so it is possible to see them only in the dark field of view.
Leptospirosis in dogs can occur in the form of lightning, acute, subacute, and chronic. The disease can take place both in the typical form, and in atypical. Since entering the pathogen in animals and to detect signs of the disease can take from three to twenty days.
Forms of leptospirosis in dogs
Fulminant form of dogs leptospirosis takes place from 2 hours to 2 days. In this case, the owner of the animal is often no time to take measures to save the animal. This form of the disease causes dog death in the ninety-five percent. The symptoms can be very diverse: from increased body temperature to the animal sluggish, in some cases, on the contrary too active. After a few hours the temperature becomes normal or slightly decreased. Heartbeats are between ninety to one hundred and ten per minute. Animal often blows slimy mouth and eyes become yellow, urine may contain impurities of blood. In ten – twenty hours – animal dies from asphyxiation.
The acute form of leptospirosis symptoms in dogs is characterized for puppies – from seven days to two years. The pet stops eating, body temperature is increased – 39.5 – 41.5 degrees. The dog is weak and has no activity. Febrile phase of the disease can occur from two to ten days. Your dog is difficult to urinate, urine is dark brown or reddish. There may be bloody diarrhea. In some places, there are wounds and sores. The increase in body temperature of more than thirty-nine degrees is possible only for a short period, usually in the evening. The disease lasts from two to four weeks and often occurs benign.
The chronic form of leptospirosis in dogs is not too common. The mucous pet membrane is pale, it loses weight, there are sores on the body, swelling inguinal and cervical lymph nodes. From time to time the body temperature increases, in the same period the animal urine is brown in color, often animal breathes.
To determine disease the doctor should examine an animal and make analyzes and find out causes and transmission of infection.
Leptospirosis symptoms in dogs
Leptospirosis in dogs occurs at lightning speed and can be acute, subacute and chronic. The disease can manifest typical symptoms and atypical (fulminant and chronic forms). The incubation period (time from infection to onset of symptoms) ranges from 3 to 20 days.
Multiplying in the blood, the bacteria can affect the kidneys and liver. It is therefore very important to quickly reveal the problem, using special tests for infection and make blood chemistry to control the performance of bacteria.
How is dog leptospirosis diagnosis made?
Dog leptospirosis diagnosis is confirmed by serologic testing of blood: the determination of antibodies to different serotypes (types) of leptospires. In this sense, it is very important to find leptospirosis vaccine for dogs as soon as possible. Also necessary to consider that the standard vaccine contains only the two most common serotypes of Leptospira, and in fact much more. That is, even properly and timely vaccinated animals can face with canine leptospirosis.
Leptospirosis dogs treatment
Even before a positive result for leptospirosis you should start symptomatic leptospirosis in dogs treatment with the help of: broad-spectrum antibiotics, vitamins, immune modulators, liver protecting, drip infusion. After an accurate diagnosis it is added a special antibiotic, effective against Leptospira. If leptospirosis is confirmed during 1 – 2 days of clinical signs, you can apply the serum against leptospirosis.
Leptospirosis in dogs incubation period is possible to prevent. The most effective prevention of leptospirosis is limiting bathing dogs in suspect waters, the destruction of rodents, as well as vaccination. Leptospirosis vaccine is desirable to introduce more than once a year, for example, once every 8 – 9 months, because by this time the immunity becomes less stressful.
An important element in the treatment of dogs with leptospirosis is a special diet. There are various dietary regimes, one of which should be prescribed to your dog, depending on on many factors of your pet.
